Yu Wang, conductor

Come enjoy a dazzling musical evening of enchantment, whimsy and magic. The UMD Repertoire Orchestra opens its first spring concert with the Overture to Engelbert Humperdinck’s beloved Christmas opera, Hansel and Gretel, with its youthful joy and folklike charm. Rimsky-Korsakov’s most beloved masterpiece, Scheherazade is based on the Middle Eastern folk legend, “One Thousand and One Nights,” or “Arabian Nights.” The two movements to be performed are stories that Scheherazade tells her husband the Sultan to avoid being killed; the first is of a stormy sea voyage and the second is of a young prince and princess. The concert will conclude with the brilliant and colorful Mother Goose Suite, with each of the five movements depicting a French fairy tale by the imaginary Mother Goose such as “Sleeping Beauty” and “Beauty and the Beast.”
